Getting Your Kids Organized for School in 5 Quick Steps

April 6th, 2008 by ivorthomason

By Sara Pedersen Getting organized is more than eliminating clutter and creating neat storage systems. One of the most important areas of organizing is task management. Its never too early (or too late) to teach kids how to get and stay organized with schoolwork. The skills they learn now will carry over into high school, college, and ultimately, their careers and home management as adults. 1. Establish a great homework routine. With your child, determine the best time for daily school work and stick with it. For some kids, it will be right after school. Others may need some downtime to play, and then its time to hit the books. The most important thing is to stick to the schedule so your child knows whats expected. 2. Set up the space. Have a designated study area, such as the kitchen table. But for unique assignments, allow for some flexibility such as moving to a rocking chair for reading chapter books. Create a school supply box and keep it well stocked with supplies (paper, pens, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, ruler, sticky notes, calculator, etc.) so kids dont have an excuse to get up. 3. Make sure you know whats going on. Instruct children to unload their backpacks as soon as they come home. Have them hang up their bags in a designated area (try a coat rack, pegs on the wall, or a wicker laundry basket near the front door) for easy access tomorrow and bring homework to the designated study area. Check in each day so youre aware of their workload and take special care when they seem overwhelmed. 4. Encourage the use of lists and planners. The older kids get, the more homework and activities theyll have. Teach them to manage their tasks with the use of simple lists or a planner/calendar of some sort. Office supply stores sell ones with cute kid-friendly designs, or use computer lists (or even PDAs) for techie kids. When they learn of upcoming assignments, tests, or events, they should write them down in their planners. 5. Encourage color coding. Color affects our mood and memory. Let kids pick the colors of their folders and notebooks to correspond to different classes. If green reminds them of science, then theyll know instantly to grab the green notebook when looking for their science notes. Copyright 2005 Time to Organize. All rights reserved. Financial Planners

April 5th, 2008 by ivorthomason

By Eric Morris Planning is the specific process of setting goals and developing ways to reach them. The success or failure of any enterprise or project depends mainly on proper planning. It is rightly said that failing to plan is planning to fail. Financial planning is an integral part of the job of financial planners. It is needed both in terms of long-term and short-term financing. Financial planning in the long-term is concerned with the design of the pattern of financing, and in the short-term it is concerned with forecasting of cash. Financial planning is the application of planning to the various aspects of the finance function. Basically it involves the formulation of the financial plan which states the quantum of finance required, the pattern of financing and the policies to be pursued for the administration of the financial plan. A business enterprise requires short-term and long-term capital. The total capital required by a concern is termed as capitalization. The short-term capital or the working capital is the capital required to meet the day-to-day obligations or the operating expenses. The long-term capital is required to acquire the fixed assets. Generally, on a conservative ground, a portion of the working capital is also met out of long-term capital. The capital so required may be collected from different sources. A substantial share is raised from internally generated funds. The remaining part should be raised from outside sources, such as the issue of shares and debentures, or the raising of loans. The pattern of financing is known as capital structure. It should be designed in such a way as to obtain the required amount at the lowest possible cost. Once the required amount is raised, then it is the job of financial planners to see that the funds are allocated in the best possible way to obtain the maximum benefits. Implementing proper control systems can ensure the efficient use of the funds. Small Business Marketing Tip: Repurpose Your Content

April 2nd, 2008 by ivorthomason

By Debbie LaChusa Ever since I started 10stepmarketing, one of my primary marketing tools has been writing articles. I love it for several reasons. First, it’s free. And, as a small business owner without a lot of money for marketing, that makes it tops in my book. But I wouldn’t rate it so highly if it didn’t also provide other great benefits. Number 1: It’s a great way to generate back-links to your website, which increases traffic. Number 2: It’s a great way to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Number 3: And this one is the kicker … You can use the articles you write for a variety of other purposes. For example, I write articles for my weekly ezine, but I also post them in article directories, and I even pull out parts of the articles and feature them on my blog. That’s … count ‘em … three uses for the same content! I call it repurposing content and it’s an incredibly efficient way to market. You write something once and you’re able to use it several different ways to market your business. It’s efficient, it helps you accomplish numbers one and two above, and best of all, its marketing that doesn’t cost you anything. To get started, simply survey your existing content. What have you written? 1) Do you have articles on your website? 2) Do you have newsletter articles? 3) Are you posting to a blog or forum (yours or anyone else’s)? 4) Do you write for trade journals and industry publications? 5) Do you respond to client or prospect questions or emails? 6) Have you written a book? ALL of these are sources for content you can repurpose and use for other forms of marketing. And, if you can’t answer “yes” to any of the above, do you have knowledge and expertise that others can learn from and can you start writing for one or all of these purposes? Take a few minutes this week to take this step and you will have uncovered at least two to three new marketing avenues you can easily add to your marketing plan at no additional cost. Cheap Loans - For The Borrowers Fixated On Low Cost

March 31st, 2008 by ivorthomason

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Amanda_Thompson]Amanda Thompson Finance market is at peak reaching for new heights. Increasing number of lenders in the finance market has opened a new dimension for the borrowers to take advantage of borrowing money at competitive interest rates. Each lender wants to grab more and more number of borrowers and thus offer infinite number of loan options and that too at cheaper rates. Cheap loans are the latest addition in the loan category that offers cheap and easy loans to the borrowers. The word cheap loan is defined differently by different people. For some a cheap loan can either be a loan with the lowest monthly repayments for a sum of money, or to another a loan which has the lowest amount of interest repayable in total. A cheap loan can be in the form of cheap personal loan, cheap secured loan, cheap unsecured loan and the list is endless. The usage of cheap loan is not confined to middle or lower class people. It just implies that a loan is offered at better terms and conditions that go perfectly with the borrowers requirement. These terms vary from individual to individual. For a regular income earner, a lower monthly loan will help in saving a big sum of money. On the other hand, for a businessman whose monthly income is not stable, a loan with flexible monthly payments such as overpayments, underpayments or payment holiday will be highly suitable. Before you apply for a loan, the first thing you need to consider is what a cheap loan means to you, a low cost, lower monthly payments or a longer monthly term some of these or a combination of all these. Various loans are available in the loan market to meet the needs of diverse group of people in UK. To find a cheap loan, you need to do a bit of research. You can start your research with finding the lenders who can provide cheap loans. Traditional lenders such as financial institutions and banks can be approached to find out their terms and policy of lending. Applying for a loan from a bank involves a lengthy and rigorous process. It involves lot of paperwork. A borrower has to stand in queue to deposit their application form and has to wait for a long time to know the status of their application. What will a borrower do with the money he can borrower today which he needed a week back to meet some urgent financial crisis. Important factors such as speed and time get ignored in the whole loan application process. But, in case if you have learnt to match pace with the latest technology then you can look for online lenders who can offer you better deal at cheaper rates. Online loans can save your precious time and money. Online lenders understand that the key factors rules in todays fast-paced life are speed and right timing. And thats what they focus on. The online process of applying for a loan is easy. A borrower just needs to fill up a small application form with some personal details such as name, loan amount one wants to borrow and few other. One should not worry about his or her personal information getting misused; majority of the online lending websites ensure its privacy. Do read the privacy policy of the websites to make sure that your details are in the safer hands. A borrower can browse infinite number of online lenders by browsing through several lending websites to find the loan that is cheap and matches his or her personal needs and financial circumstances to the best. A borrower can collect loan quotes from several lenders for the loan that he is looking for and then he should compare them to find the best cheap loan. Next thing you need to focus on is your credit status. A good credit rating will help you borrow money from the finance market at better rates. People with bad credit rating too can get a cheap loan but, the interest rate or monthly payments will be comparatively higher. As there exist a risk of default or failure to pay the installments on the part of the borrower. A loan that involves low monthly payments, longer repayment term, flexible repayment options and low cost will be a perfect mix of what is called a cheap loan. A well-planned thorough research will help you find a cheap loan that goes well with your financial circumstances. How to Work with Florida’s Lemon Law

March 29th, 2008 by ivorthomason

By E. B. Randall If you haven’t read the article on “Coverage Under Florida’s Lemon Law,” you’re strongly encouraged to read that first so that you’re clear on what vehicles, under what circumstances are and aren’t covered by the Florida Lemon Laws. This article is about the procedures which are necessary when you decide to pursue your rights under the Florida Lemon Laws. Your first concern is how long has it been since you bought the vehicle. A Lemon Law action can be brought during what is generally called the “Lemon Law Rights Period.” This period is the eighteen (18) months beginning on the original delivery date or the first twenty-four thousand (24,000) miles. The period ends with whichever occurs first. The process required often seems to be both long and complicated. While it can be discouraging at first, if you are willing to be patient, stay with it and be sure to follow the procedures carefully, you can succeed. Don’t give up and don’t let anything discourage you from trying. What follows is an outline of the process, the basic requirements and the steps involved: First, within the Lemon Law Rights Period, there must have been either (a) a minimum of three attempts by the manufacturer or its agent to repair the vehicle for the same defect (b) the vehicle must have been unusable for reason of attempted repair by the manufacturer (or its agent) for one or more defects for a total of thirty days or more. This does not include any periods for maintenance dictated by the owner’s manual. Second, when vehicle reaches a cumulative total of fifteen or more days being out of service for repair by the manufacturer or its agent for one or more defects, the owner is required to give written notice of the need for repair, by registered or express mail, to the manufacturer. Then the manufacturer has one last chance to fix the defect. Third, if this final attempt at repair fails, then manufacturer must either replace or repurchase the motor vehicle within forty days. However, it isn’t automatic. You must continue to follow the proper procedures to enforce your rights by following these steps: If the manufacturer has a dispute-settlement procedure then you need to apply under that procedure. Not every manufacturer does, so be sure to check with the manufacturer. If you’re not pleased with the decision of the manufacturer’s dispute-settlement procedure, you can then apply to be heard by the State of Florida’s New Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board. If Florida’s New Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board declines to hear the case OR it hears the case but makes a ruling against you, you can now file the case in Circuit Court. If you are appealing from a ruling against you by the Board, you need to do it within 30 (thirty) days of that ruling. In the most general terms, the covered vehicle must have been subject to repair for the same defect (which impairs the value, safety or usability of the vehicle) for at least thirty (30) days. This must occur during the Lemon Law Rights Period. You must also be acting in good faith and must follow the law in providing proper notice to the manufacturer. Finally, you will need to submit to arbitration. The Office of the Attorney General has published more complete information in “Preserving Your Rights Under The Lemon Law.” You can obtain this publication through the Division of Consumer Services at: (800)321-5366 or by writing to: Office of the Attorney General Lemon Law Research Unit The Capitol Tallahassee, Florida 32399-1050 E.B. Free Drug Samples in Texas A Bad Idea?

March 28th, 2008 by ivorthomason

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Patt_Carpenter] Patt Carpenter “Free” is a great thing. It costs you nothing if you get something for free, right? Or does it? It the world of medicine, drug company sales reps in Dallas, Houston and elsewhere in Texas try keep sample cabinets in healthcare providers’ offices well stocked with the latest medications for doctors to give out when needed. Most individuals like going home with free samples because it saves them a trip to the drugstore, plus their co-pay, if they have one. And MDs are happy to pass them out because samples often help patients get immediately started with a treatment. But several leading medical centers are now restricting the use of samples. In addition, a small group of doctors are shutting down their sample cabinets. They say that medical professionals should be selecting the most appropriate medication for a patient based on the best scientific evidence available, not just grabbing something from the sample cabinet that might fit the bill. The doctor will say, Here, start on this, and lets see how it works, said David J. Rothman, president of the Institute on Medicine as a Profession, a research group at Columbia. The question to the doctor is: If you didnt have it in your drawer, would that have been your drug of choice? The free samples crackdown is due in part to the growing concern about the close ties between physicians and drug companies. Rothman says that physicians dont realize the extent to which their medical judgment is influenced by their acceptance of the samples. He pointed to recent studies finding that the number of doctors who treated high blood pressure with the first line drugs recommended by national guidelines was low, but increased sharply when free samples were removed. Currently, the University of Michigan Health System has completely banned free samples, and the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University medical schools have prohibited staff members from accepting them, although samples can be given to Stanfords pharmacy for use in free clinics. A number of medical groups and practitioners have also changed their policies. Dr. Jonathan Mohrer, an internist in Forest Hills, Queens (NY), said he closed his sample cabinet in part because his office was overrun with pharmaceutical sales reps. It was totally spinning out of control, Dr. Mohrer said. They were meeting each other and schmoozing in the waiting room it was like a party. Mohrer’s staff spent a portion of their time arranging the cabinet, throwing out expired medications and trying to locate the right drug. Patients were kept waiting while sales representatives were ushered in. And yet, some medical professionals say theres an upside to the passing out of free samples. Using samples, a doctor can see if a patient can tolerate a new medication before the patient buys a 30-day supply. Physicians who treat low-income individuals like to have samples for them, as well as for uninsured patients. Samples also provide patients with the convenience of one-stop shopping. If a patient has waited some time to see a doctor and rearranged their whole working schedule, it may be another four or five days before they can fill a prescription. Some doctors feel that for individuals who are busy, working people, with family responsibilities, there shouldnt be any further delay. In addition, many MDs say they like using samples because the sales reps are an important source of medical education, keeping doctors current regarding the latest drug therapies. The drugs promoted through free samples have a tendency to be newer medications that doctors are less familiar with, some experts report. Critics of samples say they prefer using older drugs, because the side effects are already known. They also say that helping poor and uninsured patients is not the intent of the sample distribution. Critics feel that Medicares prescription-drug coverage, the proliferation of generic drugs and improvements in drug company patient-assistance programs have all made access to medication much easier these days. It’s also not at all clear whether or not samples save patients money. Critics say samples may actually drive up the cost of health care in the long term, because the drugs being promoted are the most expensive, brand-name types. And, since many medical conditions require lifelong treatment, the patient would have to purchase the drugs sooner or later. Free drugs from your doctor may or may not be the best thing for your health or bank account. Precedent puts a new spin on health insurance. Website Development - Offshore vs. US-Based

March 26th, 2008 by ivorthomason

By Adrian Singer Outsourcing software development to India, Pakistan and Ukraine has become more and more popular over the last few years, with more US businesses looking offshore to save costs on software and website development. A client recently asked me “If I can pay 5 times less in India and get the website done within the same time, why should I bother dealing with US companies?” Puzzeled for a minute, I promised to think about it and come up with the pros and cons of “shoring” vs. working with a local company. Here are the top two I came up with - Benefits of offshore website development: * Cost - often five times less * Time to market - Time zone differences combined with the longer hours invested by offshore companies, means you usually get the finished product sooner Objections to Outsourcing offshore: * Cultural differences and communication challenges, often lead to hidden costs, frustration and an uncertain completion date. * Lack of privacy & security. Source code developed for your company is likely to be embedded into other projects. (Read about government data leak) — If you feel the pros of offshoring outweigh the cons, make sure you use a “middle-man” in the form of an online market place. It’s a great way to mitigate the risk. These online market places help ensuring you are buying from a legitimate provider, by listing past performance, feedback and earning’s history as well as serving as an escrow holding payment until you are fully satisfied with the work. Container Gardening: Urban Alternative for Plant Lovers

March 24th, 2008 by ivorthomason

By Antoinette Boulay Gardening fanatics, with no space for a garden, like apartment dwellers and those in shared housing, can be assured gardening is not inevitably gone from their lives. You can always build a container garden on a balcony, patio, deck, or sunny window. Not only the joy of flowers but vegetables and some fruits can be grown. You can raise perennials, annuals, and even shrubs and small trees all in a container. Container gardening can present its own set of challenges. It requires proper planning just like any other kind of gardening. Youll need to find your USDA zone (to identify plants suitable for your zone), see how much daylight you get in your apartment or balcony, and from there you can select the best plant variety. When buying plants be prudent and choose ones with a healthy appearance and good natural shape. Trunks should be straight. Stay away from plants with twisted, slanted or deformed stems, which can affect the healthy growth of a plant. Try to buy your plants from the local nursery unless you have the right conditions to raise seedlings indoors. For your container, glazed ceramic pots with drainage holes are a good choice. Terracotta pots are nice looking, true, but dry out quickly and leave your plants without moisture. Wooden containers are good, but can be susceptible to rot. Cedar and redwood are fairly rot resistant and make nice containers but make sure the wood is not treated with creosote or other toxic materials that can damage the plants. Although you in general dont want to keep your container garden plants outside when the temperature dips below 45 F, there are plants that are frost resistant for colder climates. Eulalia grasses, Mexican feather grass, Cornflowers, Lavender cottons, Jasmine, Million bells, and Stonecrops, stand up to the frost well. If you follow these few suggestions you will be off to a good start with your new minature garden creation. Unblock Your Chi With Acupuncture

March 22nd, 2008 by ivorthomason

By James Penn While most of us dread the thought of having a needle sometimes they can be very beneficial, especially when the needles are those used in traditional Chinese medicine by way of acupuncture. Acupuncture is one part of a complete health care system that the Chinese have used and relied on for over 2,000 years. It can be used alone or in combination with herbal remedies and massage therapy. The basis of acupuncture The basis behind acupuncture is to unblock the Chi that is said to flow throughout the body along meridian channels. To do this very thin needles are inserted into the body along particular points depending on your problem. This is thought to re-balance the Yin and Yang that is what is causing the illness or problem. The meridians consist of 12 channels and in the healthy person, the Chi flows freely throughout these around the body. However when a blockage occurs to the Chi a person then becomes ill and the Chinese make use of around 500 different points to unblock the Chi and remedy the illness. Although the basics and treatment used in acupuncture hasnt altered in many ways, new ways have been implemented, such as the heating of needles, using ultrasound and electric currents when inserting. Variations on acupuncture Along with traditional acupuncture therapy that is still the form most widely practiced today, there are variations such as ear acupuncture. The ear is thought to map out the body organs and by putting pressure, by way of inserting needles into various parts of the ear, many illnesses can be helped and cured. All of the bodys organs have a point on the ear and when correctly inserted into the right place it is said that it can help with not only illness but also bad habits such as smoking. Here a form of acupuncture called staple puncture is used, tiny staples are inserted at key points on the ear and this is said to help people cut the craving for tobacco and thus help them to quit smoking. The popularity of acupuncture Acupuncture has gained in popularity in the Western world with around $500 million every year being spent in the USA on acupuncture treatment. It is thought that around 15 million people use it on a regular basis, either alongside traditional Western medicine or as an alternative. It is used for a wide variety of illnesses with some of the most common being back pain, headaches, stopping smoking, allergies and asthma. Today many hospitals and Doctors have realized the benefits that acupuncture does seem to bring and have started implementing and offering treatment alongside more traditional treatments used in the Western world. While the exact reasons behind why acupuncture seems to work isnt clear and many Western doctors dont believe in the Chi theory, it cant be denied that sticking needles into points on the body does seem to have the desired effect. The most successful claims that acupuncture can make is when it comes to pain relieving, the reason why this is thought to be is because the areas where the needles are inserted are surrounded by nerve endings. Whatever the reasons behind it working, it must work, for over 15 million Americans cant be wrong. Using Your Business Card Real Estate

March 22nd, 2008 by ivorthomason

By Naomi Williams Every business owner should have a business card, even if you are a work at home mom. If you are in business, you need a business card. The trick to business cards is making sure it is useful and eye-catching. We have already discussed the importance of having a solid brand identity, so now you need to transfer that onto your business card. What is the most important thing about your business card???? THE REAL ESTATE Here are a few suggestions on how to make the best of your business card real estate. 1. Make sure your brand identity is reflected on your business * your logo, web address, company email and tagline (if you have one) should be on your card 2. Dont forget to add your companys general information * mailing address, phone and fax number, etc 3. NEVER LEAVE THE BACK OF YOUR BUSINESS CARD BLANK * This is very important. When business cards are left blank on the back, they most often get used as scratch note paper.* Instead of leaving the back of your cad blank, try putting useful information about your company on there. For Instance: * If you have a BLOG, put your blog address on the back of the card * If you have a PODCAST, put your podcast info on the back of the card * If you have a NEWSLETTER, put your newsletter info on the back of the card * You could also list 3 bullet items that summarize your business services Your business card is a tool that speaks for your company when you are not around to do so, so make it standout!
