The Window Of Opportunity

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Robert Torrey You are only given so many opportunities in your lifetime. The longer you wait to take each one, the more likely it is for that window to close. Suppose you are in a position to approach somebody new you are attracted to. First impressions count as they make a big difference. The longer you wait, the smaller your window gets. Eventually if you wait to long your window of opportunity will close. There are many opportunities in life. Some are worth pursuing. The most important opportunity of all is one that everybody has looked through at some point in their life. This is the window of opportunity. Visualize, if you will, an event that can change your lifefor the better! This is the challenge you have been looking for take it, when it arrives. How often have we looked through this window and let something slip through our grasp, yet all we had to do with put a small amount of effort on it? Next time you see something you really want. Go after it immediately if the timing is right. On certain things the longer you wait the harder it becomes to attain. When we are teaching a dating confidence workshop we teach our students to go immediately towards whoever it is they find attractive. The longer the student waits to go talk with the person the less spontaneous it seems and the reaction starts to turn from extremely positive towards neutral and then eventually negative. When though somebody takes action like we teach them, and jumps through that window of opportunity before it closes. They usually have a great interaction.Take chances. Find your own window of Opportunity and go for it. by Robert TorreyThere is a home study course available that teaches you step by step how to get dating confidence. How To Buy A Mobile Phone Handset

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Lenkefi]Peter Lenkefi If you asked 100 people the factors that drive their choice of a cell phone, 80% would say the ringtone or the flashy design. Though personal preferences may determine how we buy our mobile phones, it is considered prudential that we factor other elements into our purchase decisions so we derive full value for our money and do not rush into extra expense after using the device. Buying a simple device like a cell phone can be an overwhelming experience. The device may cost just a few hundred Dollars but there are so many of them on the market and each company is inundating the television and newspaper with so much publicity. But in the face of all the ad tactics, consumers can work out their own checklist and then screen off manufacturers who do not conform to them.Lets try to see some of the factors you may have to consider when making a decision to acquire a handset: How deep is your budget? You should examine your funds and determine whether the phone you have set your eyes on is affordable. You may want to note that an affordable or cheap phone may have all the features you are looking for. Generally phones which sell for $100 and below are quick bulky, have minimal features and have sharp edges. If you are on low budget, seeking second hand phone or simply want basic features, this is the area you may have to venture. Phones priced $300 thereabout are usually sleek, come with web features and may have voice dialing features. Some may have dual band characteristics and calendars.Phones selling for $300 and over are the smallest in design, come with advanced features like cameras, video, mp3 capabilities, voice recorders and radio. You may also have to critically examine the features of the phone to see if they appeal to you and will serve your objectives. If you would like to record appointments, then you may need a phone with an appointment setter or calendar. If you a traveler, you may have to buy a dual band phone. You may also have to consider dual mode, that is a phone that will work for both analog and digital services. You would also need to get a phone that will accept double SIM so you can have access to multiple services without changing SIMs. If you are the busy type , you will have to look for phones with long lasting battery and long talk time so you can carry for long without recharging. Internet users will have to go for phones with more lines of display that is a bigger screen to display about 6 lines so they can be able to read text without much discomfort and too much scrolling. Buying a cell phone handset is not a chore at all but it is helpful for one to find one that will meet the pocket and at the same time satisfy lifestyle and business objectives. Understand Damping of Plants and Preventing It

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Patrick Desnoyers Seed propagation can reveal itself to be difficult if optimal conditions are not present. One common problem is the damping of the seedling. It is often called as root rot. How do you know if your seedling are affected ? Well its pretty tricky. Almost 100% of the time you realize too late that your seedlings are affected. Seeds will die in soil without germinating or seedlings will die overnight, they will be rotten at the base/soil line and the rest of the seedling will be laying against the soil. The damping off disease is caused by a fungi. Fungi being the scientific name for mushroom. At least four different fungal elements are known to cause the suddent death. It could be initaially present in the soil used to sow the seeds, or be in the seeds itself. Seedlings can be affected in their first 4 weeks of living. Bad conditions are known to trigger this fungi activity. First, overwatering will cause the shrooms to develop themselves and accelerate the rot of the seedling stem. Unsterile soil or dirty growing containers will cause damping. The best way to prevent damping of your seeds/seedlings is to adopt a clean method of propagation. First, ensure that you use clean container ans sterile soil. You can also prevent damping by keeping your pot or seed tray clean. Preparing seeds correctly for germination is solving half the problem from the start. Not overwatering is another method to prevent fungal disease. First, before each watering, you can check the soil to make sure it is dry enough. Letting the soil be on the dry side, but still moist between each watering is the best method to prevent damping. Planting seeds too deep will also encourage productions of fungi or the activtion of the inner fungi elements. Seeds need to feel the heat of the light/sun. Lastly, having good air circulation will help prevent damping, as it will help the seedling breath and the soil to dry out. To be on the safe side, you can used different chemical products, such as damping-off, but the best way is to give your seeds/seedlings the best natural treatment. Avid full time hobby bonsai grower. 10 Ways To Increase Your Chances Of Getting Approved For A Merchant Account Application

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Phillip Carmichael The world of online business has its peculiarities. Unlike brick-and-mortar stores, an e-commerce site cannot provide consumers with a physical point-of-sale (POS) terminal. Internet merchants do have their own version of this nifty device that lets them accept credit cards. Online shopping carts and payment gateway systems are the new ways to collect money off buyers. It’s not exactly that uncomplicated though. The first thing any profit-minded merchant would need to start exploring this world of modern commerce is a merchant account. In looking for one, you must prepare yourself to be a competitive applicant. Here are ten ways to increase your chances of getting that merchant account you need to start processing payments and raking in the cash: 1. Tenure matters. Most merchant account providers look at the timespan you’ve been in the business. This is a way for these service providers to know if you’re aware of the risks of the business. It says much about how adept you are to your operating business environment. They will be able to assess your ability to identify and properly handle the hazards that you will be facing. 2. You credit report is crucial. For any financial institution, credit reports are like business bibles. These show how well you handle your accounts, if you’ve repaid past debt, if you have liens against your business, judgments or bankruptcies filed by and against you. The depth of your credit is an indication of how financially trustworthy you are. If there are hits against your credit that do not belong there, contact the reporting agency (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) and provide them with proper evidence. It also helps to enclose this documentation with your credit report when submitting your application. 3. They rely on your relationships. How you maintained your last merchant accounts, in part, reflects how you will handle the merchant account that you are now applying for. Terminated mercantile accounts will show up on MATCH reports (Member Alert to Control High-Risk Merchants file) or the Terminated Merchant File kept by credit card associations. 4. Full disclosure is appreciated While all merchant account providers have their own way of looking into your credit history and everything else they need to know about you and your company, full disclosure can help make their job easier. As they say, honesty is still the best policy. 5. The paperwork that tells them all. It begins with an application form. Yes, everyone wants your signature and would like to know your name, but a merchant application form with just these are never easy for the person processing the paperwork. It is a tedious task to fill out everything, but try as hard as you can to resist the temptation of skipping the hard questions. 6. More documents to submit. The completed application is just the beginning. You should also be prepared to submit documentation such as your company’s articles of incorporation, bylaws, company profile, proof of identity of the board of directors, and many other legal documents. 7. Know what you are. Being a high-risk merchant has its ups and downs. Knowing where you stand from the onset will help you manage expectations. While high-risk accounts can rake in a ridiculous amount of money, it may also be quite difficult to find a merchant account for them. Again, credit card associations, such as Visa and MasterCard, can be unkind to the high-risk merchant. They are very unforgiving of merchants in the high risk category who often exceed the threshold for chargebacks. 8. The questions and the answers. They’ve got questions and you’ve got the answers. Well, let’s be fair, you should also get your chance on the other side of the fence. It is perfectly all right to get your turn to ask all your questions. So, to prepare both parties, it is essential that you know what to ask and you know what questions to expect beforehand. 9. Be prepared for a compromise. In an ideal setting, you would be able to get exactly what you want. Great fees. Great service. Reliable security features. But we don’t always get that. Again, it is important for us to highlight that if you are a high-risk merchant, it comes with its downsides. First among these are the fees you may be quoted. Normally, high risk industries such as gambling, adult, pharmaceutical, gaming and travel websites are charged higher fees than accounts that pose less risk for the merchant account provider. 10. Take it as a challenge. It will take time to find that perfect merchant account provider that you can trust with your business. If you don’t get it right the first time, don’t give up. Keep at it until you find a payment processor that you are fully satisfied with. The steps outlined here are meant to better prepare merchants to get an approval for their merchant account application. Remember though that while these steps are essential, you should always consider what the merchant can do for you even before starting the application process. Merchants like eMerchantPay (http://www.emerchantpay.com) provide you with all the benefits you need to run your business smoothly. Once you know that the merchant of your choice is the right one, go ahead and apply with confidence. Losing Abdominal Fat - Three Things You Ought To Know Before You Start

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Eileen Gravelle It’s a sad fact that, as we age, many of us find ourselves carrying an increased amount of abdominal fat. If you want to do something about it then here’s some facts you really ought to know before you start. 1. Abdominal fat is often the last fat you’ll lose Fat doesn’t just get stored any where in our bodies the pattern of fat storage is genetically wired into our systems. Our bodies store fat in order to help us survive famine maybe not much of a need now but it was probably very useful to our ancestors. Fat is stored in special fat cells around the body and it is always stored in areas where it’s least likely to be worked off through exercise. If we had lots of fat cells in our hands or in our lower legs or feet, then the fat would be worked off too quickly. Fat stored around the abdomen on the other hand will be retained over a much longer period. The belly is the perfect place to store fat as far as your body is concerned. Unfortunately this also means that abdominal fat is the last fat to go when you start dieting and that dieting alone won’t get rid of it. 2. Abdominal fat is bad for your health You probably know all about the pear shape - the bane of many women’s lives. Pear shapes tend to have defined waists and put on excess weight around their hips and thighs. You may be less familiar with the apple shape. Apple shapes have less defined or non existent waists and naturally put on weight around the belly area. The apple shaped body accumulates excess fat around the internal organs whereas the pear shape stores fat under the skin in the buttocks and thigh area. If you’re a pear you may hate the accumulated fat on your hips and thighs - but it’s a lot better there than around your major organs. Type 2 Diabetes and insulin resistance are two common problems associated with larger apple shapes but apple shapes also have an increased risk of breast cancer, ovulatory dysfunction, heart problems and sleep apnea. So if you have belly fat or are naturally an apple shape you need to do something about it. 3. It is possible to shed abdominal fat and it isn’t that complicated The key is to combine a healthy eating regime with both cardio exercise and core strength training. Cardio exercise is any exercise that raises your heart rate to 60-85% of its maximum rate. Not only does cardio exercise burn calories and reduce body fat - it will also strengthen your heart and lungs which is vital as you get older. Of course, once you start cardio exercise you may get hooked - exercise of this kind stimulates the body to release endorphins and mood enhancing hormones. Not only will you look better you’ll feel a whole lot better too. Your energy levels will rise even though you are doing more and you will feel more positive. But don’t think that cardio exercise is enough to shift your belly fat it will help but you need core exercise as well. You need to do exercises that specifically target your core strength and build muscle especially muscle around your middle. There are lots of ways you can do core strength training. You go to a gym and use special equipment; you can follow a core exercise program at home or you can take up pilates or yoga. All of these are excellent forms of exercise to build muscle mass and increase suppleness and strength. So you can beat nature and get your body to access the stores of fat around your middle and you don’t need any expensive products or special medication to do it. The answer isn’t complicated or difficult but it does require some effort on your part. If you make the effort you’ll soon see an amazing difference in the way you look and feel - a new, more positive and younger looking you. Bring Out The Wizard In Kids With A Harry Potter Quiz

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Brian Fong Q. I think that Harry Potter provides an excellent learning opportunity for my kids. How can I take advantage of his popularity to teach my children something? A. You’re on the right track here I think. A Harry Potter quiz would be an outstanding vehicle to teach your children logic. You don’t necessarily have to focus on particular scenes from any of the books or movies, you can use a Harry Potter quiz as a foothold into a wider learning experience. For example, you could devise a Harry Potter quiz that sets up a scenario where Harry Potter is faced with a problem that needs to be solved. He can use 1/3 magic, 1/3 math, and 1/3 logic to solve the problem. For example: You could create a Harry Potter quiz question that says: “Harry Potter is lost in the Forbidden Forrest. He has forgotten his magic wand and his spell book. All he has is his watch, a telescope, and one spell that lets him understand what animals are saying but doesn’t let them understand him. Help Harry Potter get back to Hogwarts.” Let me just say that I’m not sure that this particular Harry potter quiz question can even be answered. It’s your job to write the quiz, I’m only here to give you ideas. What you want to make sure is that you don’t just go for the easy answer and create a Harry Potter trivia quiz. That won’t do anything for your goal of creating a Harry Potter quiz that will teach your children something. Be creative and imaginative. The results of a well-crafted Harry Potter quiz will be magical if you do it right. —————————————————————- Brian Fong run the popular quiz site http://www.QuizFaq.com Quiz Faq - Your solutions for the quiz. —————————————————————- Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Brian_Fong http://EzineArticles.com/?Bring-Out-The-Wizard-In-Kids-With-A-Harry-Potter-Quiz&id=23205 buy phentermine with cod yellow phentermine diet pills cheap phentermine overnight purchase phentermine without a prescription

Get More Marketing Value from Staffing Software

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Charles Trumpess Offering high levels of process automation, recruitment software plays an indispensable part in reducing a staffing agency’s administrative burden. However, today’s recruitment applications are designed to do a whole lot more than just reduce paperwork. They can make a significant contribution to a company’s marketing and sales activity. Effective client contact management and timely, personalised business communications are essential to the success of any recruitment company. The first step in getting more from your marketing and sales activity is to better understand your existing and prospective client base. In today’s frenetic business environment it’s simply not enough to send generic email shots to everyone on your database and hope they generate some interest. With numerous demands on their time and attention, your existing clients and prospects surely won’t appreciate another bland missive to an already bulging Inbox. Worse still, they might simply block all future email communications from you. An audience of one The days of load and send email campaigns are long over. Today email marketers are focused on increasing response, conversion and retention rates using a combination of personalisation, segmentation and triggers. Increasingly segmented and triggered emails are driven by behavioural data, such as which links a recipient clicked, whether someone did or did not open an email, what pages they visited on the sender’s website or whether they did or did not take a specific action. Design matters Something like 95 percent of all commercial email campaigns are sent in HTML today. As a result, design has become critical for a number of reasons. Recipients might have their email setup to block images. Many people now use their Outlook preview panel as a handy filtering tool to weed out unwanted emails. Designers also need to consider inconsistent rendering by different email clients. The way an email looks on Gmail differs from Yahoo, for example. Some designers have adopted a purely graphical approach to email campaigns in an attempt to bypass content filters, but this brings us back to where we started. Bombarded by evermore junk mail, most people will only read about 15-20 commercial emails per day, and in many cases much less. As a result, layout, readability and usability are critical to differentiating your emails from everyone elses. In reality your email will have just seconds to provoke interest, convey value and trust, and prompt action. Democracy at work Email has been described as the ultimate democratic form of marketing communication. After all, it’s the recipient who decides whether they want to opt-in or opt-out of your mailing list; if and when they open, read and act on your email; how much information they wish to share with you; and when they want to unsubscribe. Recruiters who do not wish to fall foul of increasingly stringent anti-spam legislation and want to build genuinely lasting client relationships will learn to deploy various tactics to increase trust and build brand loyalty, such as ensuring only permission-based emails are sent from your company, switch to a double-opt in subscription process, and publicise your privacy policies. Those recruiters recognised and trusted by clients and prospects will be able to mine for more information. In turn, this will enable them to deliver higher value emails through ever-greater personalisation and segmentation. Recruitment software mail centres Todays sophisticated, made for purpose recruitment applications, such as Bond Adapt, RDB Pro and Eclipse integrate with third party email clients and offer a range of contact management or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) features. Chris Pawsey, Business Development Team Leader at Bond International Software (UK) Ltd, explains: Bond Adapt integrates email via Microsoft Outlook. Since Outlook is by far and away the market leading product we (Bond) make use of many of the functions therein. It is also possible to integrate Bond Adapt with other email clients. It is this contact management or CRM functionality that allows recruitment agencies and staffing professionals to create and retain email, letter and fax templates; conduct email marketing campaigns; and record response data. However, what these applications cannot do is prepare marketing materials, or ensure promotional activity is properly monitored and measured to ensure continuous improvement. Matter of design If you want your emails to succeed in generating interest in your services then they must always look professional. Don’t make the same mistake many applicants do when sending CVs/resumes in response to job advertisements i.e. fail to spell check and proofread them properly. If you send an email full of spelling mistakes, it will cost you sales and could permanently damage your credibility. Next, send test versions of your emails to yourself. You can sign up to any number of free email account providers such as Yahoo, MSN Hotmail and Googles Gmail. Include these email accounts in your test mailings. The point here is to catch any formatting errors that might show up in the different email programs. It’s quite common to find a HTML email that looks great in Outlook and is missing all of its images in Yahoo or Gmail. Before you send your email you should also ask yourself one fundamental question: “How relevant is this email to the recipient?” Don’t assume that the recipients will automatically see why your email is relevant to them. Often it needs to be spelt out. Succinctly explain how your recruitment company can help them and why now is such a good time to spend money on your services. You might want to consider using a professional copywriter to help you. Two of the most effective ways to highlight the relevance of your offer are to put a strong emphasis on the benefits and make your offer exclusive. Tailor any promotions you run so that they are exclusive to your recipients, giving them a strong reason to act immediately. As well as facing an avalanche of commercial emails every time we visit our In-boxes these days there’s also the ubiquitous spam, much of which comes with the added threat of viruses. In fact, a recent article in Londons Metro daily newspaper suggested that as many as one in every 43 emails received world-wide is infected with some harmful entity. So, not only does your email have to compete for the recipient’s limited time and attention, it also has to overcome their fears and apprehensions. Even with a good understanding of your target audience, establishing which email design elements work will be a matter of trial and error. To help you identify weaknesses and build on strengths, it’s a good idea to take one email design and then produce two or three variations (split test). For example, you might use the same headline and supporting image, but change the subject line. Response levels and email tracking will enable you to identify strengths and weaknesses of your promotion. Email Design Tips Effective subject lines Subject lines should be clear, direct, attention grabbing and benefits related, such as Reduce your recruitment spend by 60%. Get your hooks into em Just like other forms of advertising, emails have to capture the readers attention within the first couple of sentences. Otherwise, its all over. The hook should be a distillation of your emails overall message and strongly appeal to the readers self-interest e.g. what do they get, how do they benefit. Sign posts Generally its considered best practice to keep your emails text length to about 250 words. The body copy must support your hook with a clear focus on benefits, and then close with a clear, direct call to action. Its extremely important that there is no ambiguity about what you want the recipient to do e.g. click here, register now, reply. Mind your language A well-written email message uses the active voice and short, concise sentences. This is critical as the stark reality is that most readers wont progress beyond the first couple of lines. You have to be clear, direct and focus on how your offer benefits the reader. Avoid diluting your message by making more than one offer or going into needless detail. At the same time, its important that you include all essential information such as the cost savings to be gained, contact details and deadline to respond, for example. Readability Almost as important as what you say is how you present your text to the reader. Try to keep your paragraphs short no longer than five lines. Use 1.5 or double line spacing, and a font thats easy on the eye and big enough to read. Use bullets to emphasize key points, but avoid text in all caps or multiple exclamation marks. Set text width at 68 characters or less per line so it displays correctly in e-mail applications. Also, avoid breaking or wrapping URLs into two lines - it may cause technical problems. The more barriers you eliminate the better your chances of a positive response. Note As mentioned earlier, you should always give recipients the option to opt-out or unsubscribe and elect to be permanently removed from your mailing list. Failure to do this or to act on the recipients wishes is not only bad business practice, but could make you liable to prosecution under current UK anti-spam legislation. The Office of the Information Commissioner enforces UK regulations. Any breaches of enforcement orders can result in fines of up to 5,000 in a magistrate’s court, or an unlimited fine if the case is heard by a Crown Court (trial by jury). Keeping track Having segmented your audience, prepared your marketing message and sent your email out, youll want to know it has been received and acted upon. Tracking email responses is essential if you are to identify and eliminate weaknesses and build on the strengths of your campaigns. Here are some suggestions that will enable you to monitor and analyze the effectiveness of your email marketing for free. For accuracy, be sure to use a unique tracking code for each of your different email test variables and keep accurate records. MS Outlook provides you with a simple tracking facility which informs you when a message was sent, when it arrived and when it was opened. The downside here is if the recipient just glanced at your email in the panel view of their Inbox and then deleted the item youll only know because you will never receive a corresponding read message from your Outlook tracker. To switch on MS Outlook 2003 email tracking: 1. Launch MS Outlook 2. Click on the Tools menu at the top of the page, scroll down and click on Options. 3. Click E-mail Options, which is top-right of the Preferences page. 4. Next, click Tracking Options. 5. Select the Read receipt and/or the Delivery receipt check boxes 6. Click OK. One idea is to simply ask respondents to place something unique in the subject line that acts as a tracking code for your email campaigns. However that puts the burden of responsibility on your respondents, which is something you might to avoid. Instead us the following little trick to automatically place what you want in the subject line of a response email message: Click on this example: mailto:user@domain.com?subject=Send-Info.aboutyourcompany Replace user@domain.com in the above example with the email address you want to use and a unique campaign code. When the above link is clicked on in your email promotional message, the text immediately following ?subject= automatically appears in the subject line of a new email message. This should work in most email packages. Vital statistics If you have access to even the most basic website statistics you can track hits to your web pages by placing a question mark (?) after your web address (URL) when used in each email promotion, followed by your unique tracking code. For instance, you send 3 email promotions. Each carries a corresponding URL tracking code: Email Ad 1. http://www.yourdomainhere.com/homepage/htm?EM1 Email Ad 2. http://www.yourdomainhere.com/clients/htm?EM2 Email Ad3. http://www.yourdomainhere.com/applicants/htm?EM3 Hyperlinks with your own unique tracking codes added to the end of a URL don’t adversely affect the ability of recipients to access your web pages in any way, but will show up in the server log files. To determine the exact number of hits that a particular email generates, look at your log files within hours or days of sending your mail shot. You can check with your ISP or web host for access to your log files. If you dont mind having other peoples advertising on your website then there is a range of free website tracking services available. Take a look at AddFreeStats.com and FreeStats.com. Landing pages Having created a cracking email campaign its vital you follow through. Creating email or advertisement specific landing pages is another excellent way to track your recipient or audience response rates. Landing pages allow you to build on the initial success and interest generated by your email or advertisement. A landing page gives you the opportunity to present more detailed product or service information, answer commonly asked questions, overcome resistance, build confidence, and gather client or prospect data by including a short form, for example. Your landing page should reflect the look and feel of your email or advertisement in terms of design layout, tone of voice, fonts, images and colours. In turn, these must be sympatric to the overall design of your company website. Consistency is the golden rule here. Pack your landing pages with lots of recruitment specific keywords and then submit the individual URLs (web addresses) to search engines. Search engine spiders love landing pages because they are so targeted, and traffic searching for your keywords and phrases will find itself directed your way. Special Response Team

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Nikola Marshall Have you ever seen a police departments Special Response Team in action? These are the guys dressed in black with helmets, face shields and very large weapons. I have seen them up close and they are very intimidating, not good if you are a criminal. Have I been a hostage? In a manner of speaking. I belong to a volunteer group that works with my local police department. One of our perks is to take part in scenarios, an exercise that simulates a real-life situation. In this case, yes, Ive been a hostage. So what exactly does a Special Response team do? They are a very specialized and important branch of the police department. They are called out on hostage situations, armed barricade incidents, high risk search or arrest warrants and any crisis situation deemed necessary for use of a specialized unit. They can also be utilized in the event of a suicidal individual, civil disorder, natural disasters, riot control, bomb threats and surveillance. Essentially, they respond to any incident that requires extra resources, equipment and training that cannot be handled by traditional police response. Tactical teams require members to go through intense and specialized training. It is a voluntary position, but officers that are interested must pass a rigorous assessment to be considered. Often this includes, but may not be limited to, an oral review board, obstacle course, firearm proficiency and working various scenarios. Teams will conduct biweekly or monthly training exercises in hostage rescue, dynamic forced entry, covert or stealth clearing of a building, weapons training and, of course, the scenarios. Teams also attend outside training course offered throughout the country. They learn and update their training in areas such as shoot/no shoot decisions, securing a perimeter, threat recognition, officer down situations, building searches and the use of less lethal weapons. To keep their training fresh, they will hold one or more scenarios per year. Ill walk you through the first one I was involved with. The scenario was a hostage situation at an office building. One person was down, the number of hostages and suspects was unknown. This is all the information the team is given. The team was comprised of officers that were trying to become members. In this case, we had two suspects and four hostages. Our suspects were police officers on the actual team. I was the last hostage remaining, so I had a complete and inside view of how a tactical team works. My captors found a room with a view of the front door so we could watch the progress of the team. It is a very slow, arduous process. The officers have no idea what they will find or where, so they move at a snails pace. In this case it took them forty five minutes just to enter the building! Once inside, the slow task continues. We had two hostages hiding in different rooms. When a team finds a hostage or a hostage is released, they must treat them as suspects until they are positive they are not. Once they discovered both of the hidden hostages, they moved on. Next up was to release a hostage. She ran screaming down the hall, only to be ordered to stop, turn around, put her hands on her head and then walk backwards toward the team. Then they gather what information they can as to what yet awaits them. Now we were down to me as the remaining hostage. My captors decided they would put me around a corner, threatening to harm me. This was my first close up view of the team. To say the sight before me was intimidating is an understatement! The team was dressed head to toe in black, their body armor making them look bigger and even more imposing. They were armed with high power weapons and were in very close proximity to one another. I wanted to turn around and tell my captors, Boys, you need to just give it up now. This tactic didnt work, so my captors and I retired to a room and waited. And waited. Suddenly, the door burst open with men yelling, get down! and bang!, this last because they werent even allowed paint bullets. I was tackled by one team member in order to get me out of the line of fire. And, just like that, it was over. It happened so fast, I didnt have time to think. That is exactly what they were meaning to do. The element of surprise. Congrats all around, the remaining hostage is safe! Following such a drill, the team assembles and discusses what went wrong, what they did right and how anything could have been done differently. After experiencing this drill and the others I have been in, I know that all of the teams hard work has paid off. I feel so much safer knowing there are men such as this in the event of a true life situation. Nikola lives and write in Oklahoma. Getting Your Kids Organized for School in 5 Quick Steps

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

By Sara Pedersen Getting organized is more than eliminating clutter and creating neat storage systems. One of the most important areas of organizing is task management. Its never too early (or too late) to teach kids how to get and stay organized with schoolwork. The skills they learn now will carry over into high school, college, and ultimately, their careers and home management as adults. 1. Establish a great homework routine. With your child, determine the best time for daily school work and stick with it. For some kids, it will be right after school. Others may need some downtime to play, and then its time to hit the books. The most important thing is to stick to the schedule so your child knows whats expected. 2. Set up the space. Have a designated study area, such as the kitchen table. But for unique assignments, allow for some flexibility such as moving to a rocking chair for reading chapter books. Create a school supply box and keep it well stocked with supplies (paper, pens, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue, ruler, sticky notes, calculator, etc.) so kids dont have an excuse to get up. 3. Make sure you know whats going on. Instruct children to unload their backpacks as soon as they come home. Have them hang up their bags in a designated area (try a coat rack, pegs on the wall, or a wicker laundry basket near the front door) for easy access tomorrow and bring homework to the designated study area. Check in each day so youre aware of their workload and take special care when they seem overwhelmed. 4. Encourage the use of lists and planners. The older kids get, the more homework and activities theyll have. Teach them to manage their tasks with the use of simple lists or a planner/calendar of some sort. Office supply stores sell ones with cute kid-friendly designs, or use computer lists (or even PDAs) for techie kids. When they learn of upcoming assignments, tests, or events, they should write them down in their planners. 5. Encourage color coding. Color affects our mood and memory. Let kids pick the colors of their folders and notebooks to correspond to different classes. If green reminds them of science, then theyll know instantly to grab the green notebook when looking for their science notes. Copyright 2005 Time to Organize. All rights reserved.
