By Scot McKay Have you ever happened across the Jerry Springer Show (I know this group can’t actually be Tivoing it or anythingtoo high class a crowd) and noticed how people who are cheaters cant seem to venture too far from home? I mean, the other partner always seems to be drawn from a very shallow pool of best friends, sisters, brothers, father-in-laws, etc. All the time. If you are going to cheat, at least get far enough from the nest that you at might have a fighters chance at not getting caught. Right? And good grief, does anyone ever think about how awkward the family time at Thanksgiving is going to be when all of the dust clears? For the record, no. Cheaters don’t think about any of this stuff. There is no thought process there. Just the occasional adrenaline rush. Whatever. Practically speaking, cheaters are by definition non-thinkers. Consideration of details like process and consequences generally cannot be bothered with at all, let alone managed effectively in these situations. So then, its not surprising that cheaters tend to get found outand lose. Now, dont get me wrong. Im not discounting the concept of someone wanting out of a dismal relationship so badly that they may actually want to get caught cheating, just so the burden of ending the relationship is on the other person. I’m sure that enters into it often, actually. Heavy stuff. Or should I say, pathetic stuff. Obviously I ruminate upon this sort of thing a good bit. I should, after all its my job to. But still, the concept of cheating on a partner in a committed relationship always causes me to rehearse the line, what goes around comes around just one more time. Why? Well, its simple. We as human beings have a pattern. Whether we like it or not, we tend to be painfully predictable. At the very fiber of our being, what makes up our moral core is going to dominateevery time. So it follows logically that if you choose to cheat, you are going to live the life of a cheater. Somebody reading this just said, Duh. I couldnt agree more. Duh. So what is up with all the cheating? There are clear consequences to living that lifestyle, and they basically involve getting what you deserveinfidelity. Essentially, if you build a relationship upon the premise of cheating, how can you possibly expect anything in the future but…more cheating? It has been said that after the first time cheating happens, it is forever easier thereafter to repeat the offense. I think there is decidedly some truth to that concept. Once conscience is breached, the proverbial Pandora’s Box is opened. Suppose for a brief second that you are feeling bored, sick, unattracted and/or flaky toward you committed partner. You have an affair with someone who “floats your boat” more buoyantly. Yeah, well, both you and your new, apparently exciting friend are CHEATERS. And should you choose to leave your committed partner for your new friend, you will both still be CHEATERS. The takeaway here is that both YOU and your PARTNER will have built whatever you build together upon CHEATING. Did you get that? And guess what? Youll do it again. Like it or not, cheaters indeed keep cheating. Yours will be a relationship built upon dishonesty and lack of integrity. How do you expect such a union to last? Rest assured it will not. Meanwhile, your spurned ex will be out deserving what he or she wants. A faithful partner is a good catch. Will you be left wallowing in the error of your ways? Not if you deserve what you want todayand stay true to the partner you say you love. If there are issues, work them out. If you need to get out more together, make it happen. And if you need to break up an exclusive relationship, do so before heading on to “greener pastures”. The proper thing to do is break off one committed relationship before starting another. This is the only way around the cheating issue. And yes…if you are “separated”…consider thoroughly the importance of waiting until the divorce is final before dating other people. You are still married until that happens, and dating under these circumstances generally raises subtle doubts in the mind of those you go out with. Not surprising, since much of the carriers’ revenue is dependant on features available only on digital networks. Another problem? There is no uniform Ehanced 911 system (E911) for wireless carriers. The fault lies mainly with the FCC, who has once again neglected to force all carriers to conform their systems to a single technology. Because of this, there are now two very incompatable E911 systems in the works. Nextel, Sprint and Verizon each have cell phones that use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to find a caller’s location. While Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile rely on a triangulation system. Unfortunately, both E911 systems have their flaws. The GPS system needs a minimum of three satalites to be able to “read” the handset’s location. Accuracy can be hampered by heavy vegetation, mountains or tall buildings. The triangulation system also has its shortcomings. The system relies on the strength and timing of cell towers to determine a location. It too, requires multiple towers for accuracy. This becomes more difficult in rural areas where towers are scarce. To compound the problem, Emergency Call Centers are not equipt with the technology needed to field E911 calls. Most smaller centers lack the funding for the sophisticated equiptment, while others lack the knowledge on how to integrate E911 into their existing system. According to a 2004 article in the San Diego Union Tribune, only about 12% of the country’s 911 centers had the ability to pinpoint the location of wireless phone users emergency calls. Which cell phone is best? Dual band, or tri-band phones, allow both analog and digital frequencies. If a 911 call does not connect in a digital mode, the alternate analog network is available. The FCC mandates that any carrier offering multi-frequency phones, must allow the 911 call to roam to another service if the call can not be completed on their own network. Currently, only Cingular/AT&T and Verizon offer dual or tri-bands for both their service and handsets. Sprint PCS and T-Mobile wireless phones rely on a digital band, but provide an option to roam for an analog signal. Nextel uses the iDEN network for their cell phones. Because Nextel is the only major carrier using this technology, 911 calls may be difficult to “hand off” to other carriers when roaming and may be dropped. This is why we store all of our bonsai seeds in a refrigerator dedicated for this purpose. Therefore, in order to preserve their freshness until you are ready to begin the germination process, you can store the purchased seeds in the plastic bag we have provided. You can place the seeds in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator. Once you are ready to germinate your seeds, you have two (2) germination methods: natural germination or forced germination. Natural germination: Sow seeds outside in autumn. Overwintering the seeds will accomplish all the necessary natural processes seeds require to germinate. Next spring, you should have sprouted seeds. With forced germination, you are accomplishing the germination process artificially. Therefore, you will need to follow the steps listed below. Each seed is different. However most of them require three (3) steps. Some may require more while others may require less. These steps are: the scarification, the stratification and sowing. 1 - Scarification Each seed has a shell around the live inner part. Some are harder than others. The goal of the scarification process is to soften the shell and allow water to reach the inner part of the seed. You will scarify the seeds by placing them in water, usually a glass or a bowl, for a period of twenty four (24) to forty eight (48) hours. The norm appears to be the use of warm water. Some seeds require boiling water while others require water at room temperature. Normally, the viable seeds will drown after the twenty four (24) hour period while others will float on top. If there are still seeds floating after the forty eight (48) hour period, you can discard them as they are empty seeds. Once completed, you are ready to begin the next step ( please note that some seeds require you to proceed directly to the third step). 2 - Cold Stratification The next step is the cold stratification period. This step is where all the magic of nature occurs. In nature, most of the seeds fall from the trees in autumn. Consequently, seeds spend the winter period under colder temperature permitting the chemical in the seeds to develop and trigger the germination process once the ideal temperature is reached in spring. In the forced germination process, you attempt to recreate the winter period. In order to accomplish this process, use the following materials: Plastic Ziplock bag Paper towel Water Fold the paper towel in two and moisten with water. It should not be dripping wet but humid. Place your seeds on the humid paper towel and fold it over the seeds. Place the paper towel with the seeds in the ziplock plastic bag and store them in your refrigerator for a period varying from thirty (30) to one hundred and twenty (120) days. We suggest that you check your seeds every thirty (30) days in order to prevent rot and allow for proper air circulation. You will also check for germinated seeds. If this is the case, take the germinated seeds and proceed to the next step. If not, wait the required period and then proceed to the next step. 3 - Sowing Sowing can be accomplished in the ground or in a pot. You can use any soil suitable for planting and growing. Make a small opening in the soil (approximately half (1/2) an inch deep), place the seed in the opening and cover it with a few millimetres of soil. Keep the soil moist. Extra steps for certain species If you choose to germinate your seeds via the forced germination process, you may be required to follow this extra step. This step takes place prior to the cold stratification. All you have to do is expose the seeds to ambient room temperature for thirty (30) to ninety (90) days. This is called heat stratification and is accomplished by leaving the seeds exposed in a plate on your desk. After you have achieved this step, you resume with cold stratification. Just over a decade ago, Kathy Taggares was itching to ditchher employer, frozen-food maker Chef Ready Foods, to starther own business. She decided to approach Marriott International about buying one of its salad dressingfactories. Not that she was overly optimistic(”As a youngsingle woman, I’d already had so many doors slammed in myface”), but what was there to lose? But surprisingly, her overtures met with a particularly warmreception. Marriott even offered to help her finance the $5million purchase over several years. It seemed almost too good to be true.
