Deep Water Wire Line Lake Trout Fishing Technique

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By David Girdwood For those of us who live in the southern extent of the Lake Trout range, we know that lakers head deep in the summer when the water temperature warms up. In the spring, lakers can be found on the surface and trolling a spoon at shallow depth can be an effective technique. Once the water temperature gets into the high 50’s however, lakers head deep until the cooling water brings them back up in the fall for spawning. A number of different techniques can be used for deep water Lake Trout. If you have a good idea where they may be, using a heavy jig is a deadly technique. Other deep water techniques such as using a downrigger can be effective. But perhaps the most efficient, is using a traditional but out-of-vogue technique, namely using wire line. The wire line technique utilizes stainless wire line on a heavy trolling outfit. A long mono or flourocarbon leader of about 6 feet is attached to a swiveled sinker, which is attached to the wire. A sinker of about 1 ounce gets the line down nicely. A flutter spoon is utilized, these spoons being of very light design, perhaps 4 inches in length. You generally will feed the line from the reel by running the boat quickly and free spooling the reel with light thumb pressure since the wire does not spool out very easily under slow speed until sufficient line is out. When you feel you have sufficient length out, slow the trolling speed to minimum, and work the bait in a forward and back motion to allow the bait to flutter on the back motion. Strikes typically happen in that flutter. You want to keep the bait quite close to bottom, over time you’ll feel the difference between your bait rubbing bottom, and just the usual tension as you bring the rod forward In general, an outfit set up in this fashion with 30 pound wire, and a 1 ounce weight, will run 1 foot deep for every 3 feet of line out. A line counter reel will get you to an accurate depth, otherwise marking the line at 50 or 75 foot increments will help you establish if you have the right amount of line out to be on bottom quickly Make sure you have your drag set to permit larger fish to take line, can you lay money on wire line not giving you any stretchI hope this provides you with another tool in your arsenal for catching mid-summer fish. Lakers can be caught quite efficiently on this method. It has the significant advantage over downriggers, that you can work the bottom without worrying about picking up material from the bottom and not knowing about it, or popping the line off the tension release. Using the heavy tackle can be somewhat tiring, but if you want to be able to count on bringing home a fish for the table, deep water wire lining may be just the edge you’re looking for. How Effective is Aromatherapy in Sexual Arousal?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Nick Mutt Aromatherapy helps in promoting relaxation, suppressing appetite, bringing both physical and mental healing to the body, and in enhancing sensuality. This can be accomplished with candles, oils, inhalers, or diffusers when the scent of the essential oils releases into the room. Essential oils are taken from a plant’s flowers, leaves, stalks, bark, rind, or roots. The essential oils and herbs are varied and they all have different properties and while some are helpful with skin conditions, or arthritis, others may help stimulate the mind, increase your energy or even enhance excitement and create a romantic atmosphere. Some herbs and essential oils are sensual and natural aphrodisiacs. Patchouli and Sandalwood essential oils are very useful in creating an atmosphere of romance. You can easily purchase aromatic candles that have these essential oils added to them. The oils may also be added to the candles or a diffuser for a wonderfully natural and aroma that will help enhance your romantic setting. An essential oils massage can be a sensual act that you share with your partner. Many plant oils contain natural aphrodisiac properties and when used in massage oil, they can set a mood that is inviting to romance and love. Massage with herbal essential oil increases your blood circulation and thus warms you. It is a very popular technique used to increase sex drive. So, it is not difficult to infuse the air with romance through the use of aromatherapy. Other ideas to set the mood include putting on some light music in the background. Warning: Please note that using essential oils directly on your skin without diluting them with carrier oil may cause skin irritations to occur. Always read the safety precautions on the labels of your essential oils before using them. Copyright Nick Mutt, All Rights Reserved. Finding and Using Coupons

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Lisa Hallman So you may think coupons are not worth it? Or you can’t find the coupons you need, this will help you understand what you can do to increase your savings. I’ve learned to save 50% even 90% off my grocery bill by just knowing, and matching coupons to sales. By understanding how they work, and the limitations. YOU CAN USE COUPONS WHEN USING A RAIN CHECK Just because you have a rain check for an item doesn’t mean you can’t use a coupon. You can often get rain checks for items that have run out on a really good store sale. Extend the savings of product when they have run out and request a rain check. Using a coupon with a rain check fine. COMPLIMENT OR COMPLAIN TO GET GREAT SAVINGS When you contact a company because you really liked or hated a product they will often ask you for your name and address and send you free coupons. Sometimes even if your calling to inquire on a product is good enough for them to warrent giving FPC (free product coupons) or just regular cents off coupons. USE COUPONS WHEN PRICE MATCHING At a store that does price matching (i.e. Zellers) bring in a flyer to increase your savings to show them the price at another store. There is no reason you can’t use coupons when doing this. The reason most people price match is because they prefer to do their shopping at a less busy store, or because they collect reward points. GET ON A COUPON TRAIN If you want to get the coupons you really want, start swapping at coupon groups or get on a coupon train. Coupon trains are coupon filled envelopes that pass from one person to another by mail, and upon receiving it remove coupons they want and add coupons they don’t need. Then send it on to the next person. Try Trading Post Coupons or Canadian Coupon Club on Yahoo! Groups. I highly recommend them, and it’s where I participate alot. They are also free to join, which is a big bonus. WHERE TO FIND COUPONS The best places to look are in the stores in all isles near the product for which the savings are for. You will also get inserts in with your local paper’s flyers, community and big name newspapers. You can also find great savings in newspapers in the Sunday edition. You can also find them online on the company website, where you can often print them out or request them. If you are going to trade coupons, collect all coupons so you have something to trade. Have fun, happy saving! Lisa Hallman, owner of Thrifty Canadianand publisher of many articles on Savings advice for Canadians. Restaurant Gift Cards

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Jimmy Sturo People love to receive restaurant gift cards because most everyone loves to be treated to dinner. They make a great gift for young and old alike and can be given for any special occasion - such as birthdays, religious holidays, anniversaries, weddings, and so on - or just to say thank you. The popularity of restaurant gift cards has doubled since 2002. In a busy world where families have little time for fun and recreation, what better gift to give than an evening out without having to spend money on a meal? Most all restaurants offer gift cards, and many offer them online. The values usually range from $10 to $100 depending on the establishment. Companies often take advantage of buying restaurant gift cards in bulk to treat their employees on holidays or for outstanding performance awards. This not only favors the company that purchases the cards, but it inevitably helps the restaurant if the meal is good. People tend to go back to restaurants where they know they will get a good meal every time. Usually, if the entire amount is not used on the first visit, the balance will carry for another time. The card can also be purchased in increments. For example, instead of giving a $100 card, give four $25 cards. Make sure you check with the restaurant ahead of time to make sure the card is valid for the date you would like to go. There are instances, holidays for example, when the card might not be honored. Gift Cards provides detailed information on gift cards, restaurant gift cards, online gift cards, gas gift cards and more. Gift Cards is affiliated with Online Gift Certificates. Finals Redux, And Why Text Books Are A Racket

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Patrick Flynn So, I write this fairly intellectual piece on standardizing video conferencing tech over 3G cell phones for a class. Turns out I got in such a hurry, I forgot to save it. (Bah) I printed it and got it turned in, but in all of Microsoft’s wonderful Office glory, I forgot to save the sucker! Oh well, I’m sure my self grandeur wasn’t event worth the time of copying and pasting for your eyes to scroll over. Finals is over (only five more terms!) and the repeating, severely masochistic pain of returning textbooks returns. So exactly why is it that when I buy over $700 worth of books and guides (not to mention a $105 non-returnable dvd set, grrrrr) that only ten weeks later I get $100 back? I could rant for hours on this anger, this Tony Sopranoish money laundering scheme that is out to screw our future economic leaders? For those who may not privileged enough to attend a college or university within the last 15 years, here’s the trimesterly run-around. Student gets class list. On said list, prof or instructor lists texts and whatnot required for the class. For an average full-time student, especially one in upper division classes, one can expect to pay $500 plus. After using maybe half of the books a student bought ( I have had classes where I didn’t even open the book) you can usually expect that half of you book won’t even be bought back because a “new version” has come out. This usually means that the publisher changed some pictures and captions, yay. And the books they do buy back, I can expect maybe %40 of the original price, I know the bookstores side, buy low sell high, but c’mon. According to maketextbooksaffordable.com publishers have to keep up with the ever changing demands of educators, and new discoveries in academia…….Bunk. I understand that it is very expensive to publish a 600 page book with full color pics and in a large format, and in some cases with a hardcover for durability. But wait, what does a person do if they want to cut publishing costs, and it allows for dynamic editing and can maintain academic standards, duh, digital media, that’s how. A publisher could easily fit a whole text book on a CD or DVD, or even for download via PDF file or some other locked format…. you want the latest version? Pay a “upgrade fee” or some such thing, and boom, the “book” is updated. Not that no-one has come up with this idea before, and in some cases, some publishers are doing this, or instructors will gather their own material and bundle it on the cheap for students. But its just like the RIAA, only text publishers don’t go Scarface on its customer base, trying to destroy them while saying “buy our stuff”.If you at all are concerned about this, or have some sort of dog in the fight. Til next time. Issues of Inter-Connectedness of the Agricultural Business with Regards to GM Crops

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Lance Winslow Some environmentalists decry the genetic manipulation and modification of crops and at least one organic grower has gone on record as stating that the problems in the actual industry are due to basic, interconnected issues in the ag business. Of course it would be hard not to agree that there are so many issues around our nation for what we grow and although GM Crops can solve some problems there are still other issues to consider. Considering these things in advance and genetically modifying our food to take care of these issues makes sense. Think for a moment if you will about other nations where things are grown and shipped here and the issues that need to be dealt with such as; sewage water irrigation, e.Coli, insects, certain pesticides and chemicals, trade agreements, time to ship, cost to produce + ship. All these issues might be solved thru genetic manipulation of the seeds in advance to prevent serious problems down the road. Please also ponder that our own Corporate Farmers and the few family farms left trying to compete for price and natural market forces. Then there is the labor issues, guest worker program streamlining, Everglades issues, salt water intrusion, flooding of pig and chicken waste, over used soil, hours of operation for truckers, cost of fuel to ship, Wal-Mart syndrome low-ball buyer strategies, over regulation of OSHA, EPA, FDA, and the jumping of the gun with the CDC, FBI, as well as the thought of International Terrorists screwing with our food supply and the fear of Mad Cow. Genetically Modified foods cannot solve all the problems but it can be a big help. Still the price point is also an issue for human health. The less expensive good food is the better for families meaning healthier living. We might decide to bypass the advantages of GM Crops; unfortunately this causes the costs to increase and I fear that when you can buy a Lb. of Duplex Chocolate Cookies, cheaper than a lb. of Bell Peppers, head of lettuce or Cantaloupe, then yes there are problems. But the roots of the problems must be fixed too if we are to fix the over all problems that are discussed here in this short article. It is important to have a national debate on this subject free from conspiracy theory and bogus complaint. We need to admit that the human population is expanding and we need solutions to feed everyone and while we are at it, let us also solve as many other pressing issues as possible. Determination Of Depreciation

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Michael Russell Therefore, the going concern and financial period principles underlie the depreciation process. Fixed assets, in other words, merely represent deferred expenses and the depreciation process is simply a means of allocating the deferred expenses to the correct financial period. Thus, with depreciation the emphasis is on systematic and realistic apportionment of the expenses involved in using the fixed assets. Accordingly, the accounting balance sheet does not show the current market value of fixed assets, nor does the depreciation provided measure the decrease in value over a period. The concept of depreciation as used in accounting does not imply the physical ageing of an asset. Depreciation is simply a process of apportionment and not a process of valuation. The depreciation provided fro a specific period is that portion of the total cost price of an asset allocated by this process to the period concerned. It is not always easy to determine what portion of the depreciable amount of a fixed asset must be allocated to any specific period, since a variety of factors have to be taken into consideration. The following are significant factors: Cost price - cost is the purchase price plus any additional expenses necessary to prepare an asset for use. Lifespan of an asset - the lifespan of an asset cannot be determined in advance and must, for accounting purposes, be estimated. This requires judgement, which is usually based on experience with similar assets. The present condition of the asset and the company’s policy regarding the replacement of assets will also be determining factors. The lifespan of an asset can be measured in terms of time (duration of the asset’s use), production (the total number of units an asset is expected to produce), or service (e.g. the distance it will travel), or some similar criterion. It is usual to distinguish between the technical lifespan of a fixed asset and its economic lifespan. The technical lifespan is determined by factors relevant to the particular asset concerned. The technical lifespan of an asset terminates when it can no longer provide the service for which it was acquired, or maintenance costs become prohibitive. The economic lifespan is determined by external factors such as technological advancements (e.g. modernised production methods and changing fashions) and terminates, for example, when the asset’s production capability becomes uneconomical because of such technological advancements. Due to rapid technological development, the economic lifespan of an asset is often shorter than its technical lifespan. However, an asset whose economic lifespan has expired may be used for other purposes. The shorter of either the economic or the technical lifespan of an asset is regarded as its lifespan. For accounting purposes, the useful lifespan of important depreciable assets should be reviewed periodically. Depreciation rates for current and future periods should be adjusted if the revised expected useful lifespan differs materially from the previous estimation. If necessary, the effect of such a change should be disclosed in the accounting period in which the change takes place. Fishing The Power Drop Shot Rig

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Steven Vonbrandt Most people believe that the drop-shot rig is only for finesse fishing, but there is more than one way to skin a cat! (or Fish), as the case may be. The new Power Drop-Shot style started by Kotaro Kiriyama, is fast becoming the way to bigger and better bags on many of the tournament trails. Drop-shot rigs consist of a hook tied above a sinker that is placed at the end of the line so that the lure suspends off the bottom. Conventional tackle consists of light action spinning gear and 4-8 pound line, and the tactic is usually deployed vertically in deep water. Kiriyama says “Drop-Shotting is about presenting a soft plastic lure in a manner that is different from Texas rigging or Carolina rigging.” When conditions allow, Kiriyama, (who logged 10 Top 10 finishes in his first 37 events on tour), says “You may get more bites with lighter line and smaller baits, but when there is heavier cover, a power version is required. This is a technique we have employed with success all last year, and now we are going to share it with you here in the Northeast. This technique works great in all the lakes, rivers, and impoundment’s here in the Northeast. It is a great way to put together a real quality stringer. The drop shot’s configuration with the weight beneath the lure, makes it ideal for pitching into heavy cover. The reason, is that the sinker goes through cover better and falls right to the bottom. You can fish faster and cover more water! We fish it just like other anglers fish a Texas rig, but like Kiriyama, we believe it is more effective! This is a great tactic for places like the Potomac River or Lakes such as Kerr or Gaston, where the fish are highly pressured and are used to seeing anglers flip Texas rigs and Carolina rigs. This gives the highly pressured fish a completely different look. The rig has some other advantages also. There is less line wear at the hook knot because the sinker isn’t beating against it, and the hook isn’t dragging the bottom where the line and knot can be damaged. You can also detect the bites a lot easier, because the sensation goes through the line without passing through a sinker that deadens the sensitivity. In lower Delaware we have a Bald Cypress swamp in one of the lakes, and there are also similar areas in the Nanticoke River. Most anglers flip these trees with Texas rigged worms in the 4 inch size or with a small lizard in the spring. We like the power drop shot rig in these areas the best. It attracts bass that are lying near the bottom or are suspended in cover down at the roots. You can fish this rig either horizontally or vertically. In the heavy currents in the Sassafras River on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, we drag it from the calm water into the faster moving current, and catch largemouth holding near the edges waiting for an easy meal. You can also use this rig successfully in deep cover. This will work well in the standing timber in Table Rock Lake when fished on a Fluorocarbon line in 10-16 pound test. We have used 30 pound test when the fish were aggressive, and gone down to 10 pound when the bite is tougher. This is a clear to stained water technique though, and works much better in these conditions. There are areas here in the Northeast that have extremely clear water at times, and it excels in those areas. We use this around deep points also with great success. Waters such as Spruce Run and Greenwood in New Jersey and New York are great areas to use the Power Drop shot. We use it anywhere you would normally use a Carolina or Texas rig. When we flip the Power Drop shot rig we use 6 and 6 1/2 inch Yamamoto Cut Tail worms. We have tried a variety of other baits with this rig, but the straight tail and Cut-Tail worms have produced the best results. When you are flipping it in fairly light cover, you can go with a lighter sinker of 1/16 of an ounce, and as the cover gets thicker, we go as high as 3/8 of an ounce. Since the start of 2003, we have been using nothing but the Tungsten weights for all our baits. We believe this is especially important with the Power Drop Shot also, as the Tungsten is heavier than lead, allowing for a smaller profile, which penetrates the cover better, and allows for a better feel of the bottom. We generally rig the baits with a 2/0 to a 3/0 Gamakatsu or X-Point hook, but we will go as high as a 5/0 on some of the bigger worms at times. The general rule when using this rig for flipping is simple; The distance between the hook and the weight, is no more than 3-6 inches longer than the bait itself. The rig is simple to use, no fancy tricks are needed. Just drop the bait around cover and let it sit. No other action is necessary because of the way the bait suspends off the line. The natural current of the water imparts all the action you need. We use this on bedding bass also, since we have no closed season here in Delaware during the tournaments. The technique is just like any other type of flipping we do. We drop it in near the cover, let it sit a few seconds if the bass are being finicky, and then lift it up and pitch it to the next target. Try Power Drop Shotting this year in your local waters when everyone else is throwing a Texas or Carolina rig, and you will get a big surprise! http://www.reeltimeanglers.com Steve is a professional guide, tournament anglers, writer, vido producer, radio show owner and host, and tackle dealer. Symbols In Reiki

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Eric Hartwell Symbols are pictorial triggers that are commonly used in meditation as a point of focus or as a tool for visualization in order to achieve a higher sense of awareness and energy manifestation. A symbol aims at the psyche and the subconscious mind to condense the meaning of a whole philosophy into a single symbol. This same principle is used in Reiki to aid meditation, healing and evoking positive Reiki energy. But it is important to remember that the symbol in itself is not a source of power but the healing treatment and Reiki energy comes from the healer. Reiki symbols are generally kept secret till the initiate reaches the second level. The symbols for Reiki are based loosely on the Japanese system of writing, Kanji. They are generally taught during the Reiki level 2 Attunement. However each person is unique and the subconscious of each attunes to these symbols in a different manner based to various factors like intent and psychic energies so it may happen that you may come across variations of these symbols with different Masters. There is no fixed rule for drawing these and therefore nobody is actually wrong. There are many misunderstandings concerning these symbols, one of which is that they are supposed to draw the symbols in a particular order. These symbols are generally derived from Japanese writing where the style of writing the characters is different from the western world and the writing is done with emphasis on style, direction and order but this is only done for legibility purposes and bears no relevance to the meaning of the symbol or its power in Reiki. Though the Reiki symbols are each used for a specific purpose there are some who prefer to use these symbols combined during Reiki treatments in order to boost the power of the Reiki. This is generally done to make a Reiki healing more effective.
