Bleach - Our Reliance on It is a Mistaken Belief; Part 3

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By David Andrew Smith From the first two articles it has hopefully become obvious that bleach does exactly that. It bleaches coloured pigments so they are transparent. It doesnt clean by removing. I was trying to explain this to my son-in-law who said he swore by bleach and used it for many things. Only that morning he said he had used it to clean the tannin from stained teaspoons. Again I attempted to explain that the tannin was still there it had just been bleached so he couldnt see it. His answer was I cannot see it so it has gone and the spoons are nice and shiny once again.. Defeated yet again by the power of bleach! Having thought about this for some little time now perhaps I should reconsider my quest to re-educate people about the use of bleach. The power of what people perceive to be true using their sight and smell is too great to overcome. On top of that I myself have succumbed to the power of bleach. One of my cleaners was having quite a lot of trouble removing the tannin stains that had developed on the kitchen worktops of a well used office kitchen. In the end she called me in and said she had tried everything. The stain had embedded itself in the worktop and all remedies had only succeeded in dulling the stain. Not to waste any more time and effort on this particular problem I furnished her with some bleach and a few minutes later the work surfaces were looking as new. So even in my own world there is a place for bleach! None the less there are far too many instances of young children drinking bleach that individuals should not simply leave a bottle by the toilet as seen in so many households. Keep it out of reach, preferably in a cupboard that youngsters cannot get into. Secondly never use bleach with any other cleaner. We had an instance quite recently where we had been called into a nursing home to descale all the toilets. Limescale deposits had built up on these toilets over the last 15 years. So a team of six cleaners set to work using phosphoric acid descaler. A few moments later the toilets had to be evacuated by the cleaners as the fumes were overpowering. Un beknown to us the nursing home cleaners had earlier been round to clean all the toilets and had simply poured bleach around the bowl. Result a very nasty reaction between the bleach and the acid producing toxic fumes. So there is a cautionary tale to take note of. When the manufacturers say do not use with any other cleaning product they actually mean it! Healthy Snacks Instead Of Junk Food Garbage

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Chet Day Do you put more money in the candy machine than the collection plate each week? If you’re like most people, you’d not even aware of how much money you’re spending on junk food snacks every week of your life. Want to try an interesting junk food experiment? Keep a written log for one week and write down every penny you devote to non-meal foods. You’ll be stunned after seven days to see how much of your hard-earned cash is paying for sugar-filled soft drinks, candy bars, potato and corn chips, and crap “food” that has little or no nutritional value. If you want to snack, and most people do these days, give some thought to these healthy alternatives to junk food: * Snack on organic raisins* Snack on dates with an almond stuffed inside* Snack on other dried fruits* Snack on a walnut placed on top of a dried apricot If you’re watching your weight or if you’re diabetic or have sugar-related health issues, include in your bag of healthy snacks some celery and carrot sticks and intermix bites of dried fruit with bites of veggie sticks. Here’s a healthy snack recipe that’s not only great during the holidays but wonderful during the whole year… Healthy Snack Peppermint Balls 1 cup pitted dates1 cup raisins1 cup raw almonds2 cups rolled oats1 cup shredded coconut2 Tbs raw grated chocolate2 tsp vanilla extract1/2 tsp peppermint extract2 Tbs raw honey Put the raisins and dates in your food processor and blend into small pieces. Add the almonds, oats, coconut, and chocolate. Blend until the mixture resembles bread crumbs. Add the extracts and honey. Stop the machine and try rolling a small amount into a ball. If the mixture doesn’t bind, add extra honey or some apple juice. Store in your refrigerator until they’re all eaten, which won’t take long. With healthy snacks, you’ll save money and feel a whole lot better than you’ll feel if you continue to consume convention junk food. Prescription and OTC Drugs: Dangers and Permanent Damage

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dorothy_M._Neddermeyer,_PhD] Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD If you use prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs do you read the full list of side effects? No, I dont mean the side effects the commercials list at lightening speed. I mean the full list, the complete list the FDA requires for approval–provided of course, the pharmaceutical company has revealed all their test results. There arent any “safe,” prescription or OTC drugs. Each one has numerous harmful short term and unknown long term negative side effects. The side effects seem worse than what is ailing meand that is reason enough for me to use herbal and natural supplements to create and maintain wellness. This article will focus on prescription psychiatric drugs. Although, each new psychiatric drug is heralded as a “safe” wonder drug, they all have severe harmful side effects, including addiction, and withdrawal symptoms, among others. Psychiatric drugs obtain their results by causing brain dysfunction. Think about that! The way psychiatric drugs obtain results is to cause brain dysfunction. Not withstanding, without the production of brain dysfunction, the use of psychiatric drugs or other physical interventions tends to reinforce the doctor’s role as an authority and the persons role as a helpless sick person. The person is indoctrinated with the belief that he or she has a “disease,” that the doctor has a “treatment,” and that the person must “listen to the doctor” in order to “get well again.” Thus, learned helplessness and submissiveness is then vastly amplified by the brain damage. The person becomes more dutiful to the doctor and to the demoralizing principles of biopsychiatry. Denial and compliance becomes a way of life, anchored in place by brain damage. Major tranquilizers (Neuroleptics)Haldol, Prolixin, Thorazine, Mellaril, and other antipsychotic drugs create a very similar effect to a lobotomy (brain surgery) by disrupting frontal lobe nerve activity. Psychiatrists grossly neglect to point out the potential harm of psychiatric drugs to their patients, such as tardive dyskinesia, tardive dementia, general dulling of awareness, emotional numbing, difficulty in thinking, poor concentration, nightmares, depression, despair, sexual dysfunction and cognitive dysfunction. Side effects, depending on the drug and dosages, often cause side effects which are permanent with no known cure. Minor tranquilizers (Benzodiazepines) can cause lethargy, light headedness, confusion, nervousness, sexual problems, hallucinations, nightmares, severe depression, extreme restlessness, insomnia, nausea and muscle tremors. Epileptic seizures and death have resulted from suddenly stopping the use of minor tranquilizers. Sedative-Hypnotics frequently cause all the above side effects as well as a hangover effect, apparent drunken state, lack of coordination (ataxia), and skin rash. Anti-Depressants (tricyclics) can cause sedation, drowsiness, lethargy, difficulty thinking, confusion, poor concentration, memory problems, nightmares, panic feelings, and extreme restlessness; delusions, suicidal thoughts, manic reactions, delirium, seizures, fever, lowered white blood cell count (with risks of infection), liver damage, heart attacks and strokes. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) can cause headache, nausea, anxiety and agitation, insomnia and bizarre dreams, loss of appetite, impotence, confusion and alcathisia. It is estimated that between 10 and 25 percent of SSRI users experience akathisia, often in conjunction with suicidal thoughts, hostility and violent behavior. Candace B. Pert, Research Professor at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., wrote that SRRIs may also cause cardiovascular problems in some susceptible people after long-term use, which has become common practice despite the lack of safety studies. Japanese researchers also reported in Lancet, the journal of the British Medical Association, that substantial amounts of antidepressants can accumulate in the lungs and may be released in toxic levels throughout the body. Ritalin (methyiphenidate) Adverse reactions include: nervousness and insomnia, hypersensitivity, anorexia, nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, blood pressure and pulse changes, tachycardia, angina, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and toxic psychosis. Some people have developed involuntary tics, twitching and blurting out words incoherently called Tourettes syndrome. The body is an extremely complex biochemical machine, with chemical reactions and flows that occur in harmony and rhythmically one with another. They occur in specific sequences, in certain quantities, and at exact rates of speed. When a foreign substance such as a psychotropic drug is introduced into the body these flows and inner workings are disrupted. The drugs may speed up, slow down, dam up, overwhelm or deny critical metabolic functioning. This is why psychiatric drugs produce side effects. This is, in fact, why they produce any effect at all. They do not heal anything. Listen carefullypsychiatric drugs do not heal anything. The human body, however, is unmatched in its ability to withstand and respond to such disruptions. The various systems fight back and work diligently in a gallant effort to process the foreign chemical, to counterbalance its effects. The body can only take so much. Quickly or slowly, the system breaks down. Like a car run on rocket fuel, you may be able to get it to run a thousand miles an hour, but the tires, the engine and the internal parts were never meant for this. The machine flies apart. Consider the report by Thomas J. Moore, a senior fellow in health policy at the George Washington University Medical Center. Moore estimated that more than 100,000 people die every year in America from the adverse effects of prescription drugs, and one million are injured so severely they require hospitalization. Moore questions: In such a poorly managed, inherently dangerous system, consumers need to pay more attention to risks and benefits of all pharmaceutical drugs. Can you recognize the adverse effects of the drugs you are taking, especially the subtle adverse effects like fatigue or mild body aches, etc? The answer is NO. These subtle adverse effects are considered part and parcel with human existencewe have been acculturated to believe mild fatigue (albeit you have had plenty of rest) and mild body aches are common life experiences. Ask a non-drug using healthy person if they experience these symptoms. Unless they have had extraordinary physical exertion, you will hear a resounding and emphatic, NO. So, why do pharmacetical companies continue to crank out trillions of prescription and OTC drugs and spend billions on advertising every year to convince you to take these harmful and worthless potions? The answer is simpleit is a very profitable business and because people are easily influenced to believe pharmaceuticals are an easy and fast fix to lifes travail. Use a Guarantee In Your Headline To Increase Trust

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

By George Dodge Sometimes you can use a guarantee effectively in your headline. Doing so often creates increased trust in the reader. After all, if you guarantee it, you must believe in whatever it is you are guaranteeing. Remember Domino Pizza’s unique selling proposition (USP), which was also used as a headline? ‘Fresh Hot Pizza, Delivered To Your Door In 30 Minutes Or Less - Guaranteed!’ That headline worked great for Domino’s, could a similar headline work for you? Think about your product or service. Do you have a USP that would make a great headline? Can you guarantee it? If so, test putting a guarantee in your headline and see what kind of response you get. You don’t have to use the specific word ‘guarantee’ in your headline, other similar words or phrases will work just as well, for example Brian Keith Voiles, a famous copywriter, gives as an example of a guarantee type headline, the following: ‘Try Moose Skin Care System For 30 Days, If Your Skin Isn’t Softer And Glowing, Return It For A Complete Refund!’ Don’t forget, keep testing your headlines. Don’t fall in love with any particular headline. If your headline does not produce results, trash it and use another. Use your best headline as your control and try other headlines to see if you can beat its’ results. George Dodge has been working on the Internet since December 1994 and has developed, and served as webmaster for, numerous government and commercial websites for the past ten years. Two of his commercial sites focusing on copywriting include Winning Website Sales Letters that is a great resource for entrepreneurs and webmasters trying to write Web Copy to sell on the Internet, and http://www.Headline-Creator-Pro.com which is a software site where you can get your copy of the amazing headline generating software tool that enables you to create winning headlines quickly with push button ease. Say What? You Don’t Have An Estate Plan . . . !

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Michael Pancheri If you haven’t taken the time to prepare your estate plan, you’re not alone. According to a survey conducted by FindLaw.com, a whopping 55% of Americans haven’t even taken the time to have a will prepared, and 67% don’t have a living will in case they become incapacitated or terminally ill. But that’s not all! The Findlaw.com survey also found that even those who did have a will generally did not keep it updated. In fact, nearly 40% said they had not updated their will within the last five years. It’s not as though people are unaware of the need to plan their estates. Estate planners and many other professionals have preached the need for wills, and other estate planning documents for years. Most recently, the Terri Schiavo case brought the issue of living wills to national prominence. Yet, despite the brief surge in demand for living wills and other estate planning documents during that time, most Americans seem to have lapsed back into complacency about planning for their incapacity or death. “That, in itself, may be the problem,” says Attorney Alan H. Berman of Hartford, Connecticut. People don’t like talking about death and dying, especially when they’re talking about themselves or their loved ones.” Attorney Berman says that many of his clients put off having a will prepared until the very last minute. “I get a lot of calls just before they have to get on an airplane,” he says. “Then they know they can’t put it off any longer.” Death and dying are nobody’s favorite topics, to be sure. But, there seems to be more to it than that. The Allianz American Legacies Study, which was sponsored by the Allianz Life Insurance Company, surveyed 2,627 people of all age groups “to identify how they define leaving a legacy and how families are communicating about these sensitive issues today.” One of the interesting - and, probably, most revealing - facts to come out of the Allianz American Legacies Study was this - seniors and baby boomers both ranked money last on their list of important estate planning issues. Ranked ahead of money was the idea of leaving a legacy which, according to the study, “captures all facets of an individual’s life - including their family traditions and history, sharing stories, values and wishes.” Attorney Berman agrees with the assessment of the Allianz American Legacies Study. “From my experience,” he says, “people seem to clam up as soon as you start talking about money. They’d rather talk about their family history or certain mementos - prized personal possessions that might not have a lot of monetary value but certainly have a lot of sentimental value.” Another reason why many people procrastinate when it comes to estate planning is their feeling that they don’t have enough money to bother with an estate plan. However, as Attorney Berman is quick to point out, “estate planning is not just about money. In fact, it’s about taking care of your loved one’s needs in the event you can’t do it on your own. Money is often a means to an end, but the end is often the well-being of loved ones.” That’s the “legacy” that seems to motivate most people when it comes to estate planning. If we are to learn anything from the Allianz American Legacies Study, it would seem to be that estate planners should direct their efforts toward “legacy” planning rather than “inheritance” planning. Unfortunately, most estate planners spend their time learning about the intracacies of the estate tax laws and the probate laws when they should be learning about assessing a client’s attitudes about family traditions and history, about sharing stories, and about their values and wishes. Not that the estate tax laws aren’t important, because they are. It’s just that they’re not going to motivate many people who just don’t care about such things. That seems to be in accord with the findings of the Allianz American Legacies Study. In that study, it was found that “[t]he top qualities both generations look for in a legacy advisor are honesty, trustworthiness, compassion, a good listener and a strong and clear communicator.” So there you have it! If you haven’t taken the time to have your estate planning done, it may be because your focus was on money. Instead, try focusing on your family and all the things that you love and cherish. You might find that you’re suddenly anxious to find a legacy advisor that will make your estate planning experience a very memorable one. You’re family will love you all the more for it. Just one more thing! According to the Allianz American Legacies Study, it is estimated by Paul Schervish and John J. Havens of the Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy that $41 trillion is set to be willed, passed on, and/or left to others over the next 50 years. So, even though we don’t like to talk about it, it is an integral part of everyone’s estate planning. Attorney Michael Pancheri is the founder and CEO of the Living Trust Network. Pest Control - Good Bugs

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

By Stephanie McIntyre In the quest for the pest free garden, man has created an arsenal of potent chemicals to rid himself of these unwanted visitors. But there is an environmental as well as health-related price to pay for the indiscriminate use of pesticides. Little by little we accumulate residual quantities of these chemicals in places we don’t want. That’s why so many are sold now on the organic or natural approach. For many gardeners, the number one ally in the fight against harmful insect pests is the beneficial insect. These guys are the one’s that make a meal of the guys we don’t want around. Some are tiny and some relatively large but the important thing they have in common is that they eat pest insects. Here are some of them: Parasitic wasps - these wasps lay their eggs on an insect’s body. When the eggs hatch, the larvae use the insect host as food. They feed on a variety of destructive bugs such as whiteflies, caterpillars, moths, greenflies, and scale insects. The adults feed on nectar and pollen, so planting flowering plants will bring them to your garden. Ladybug larvae - are rather ferocious, little insects that are spiny and black with bright spots on them. Although completely harmless to humans, they are voracious aphid eaters. Often when aphids appear on your garden plants, ladybugs and their larvae will show up shortly after and immediately begin to feed. Dragonflies - while not strictly speaking predators of garden pests, they do love to eat mosquitoes, a pest in any case. They eat adult mosquitoes by capturing and eating them in the air, and eat mosquito larva in the water. Ironically, these excellent mosquito control agents, are sometimes victims of the spraying that some municipalities do to control mosquitoes. In the long run, this can have the effect of actually increasing the mosquito population as the dragonflies are killed off. Prying mantises - are large, impressive insects, some of which look large enough to be mistaken for small animals. They have huge forelimbs with which they can snatch and hold a victim while devouring it (head first). While they certainly have their upside as beneficials, it’s worth noting that these fellows don’t limit their diet to only bad bugs. They’ll eat pretty much any other insect, including each other. But since there are often way more undesirables that good guys, chances are they will fatten up on aphids, grasshoppers and the like. Beneficial nematodes - are microscopic insects that eat cutworms, grubs, weevils, armyworms, and many, many other soil dwelling bugs. You’ll probably have to order them from a supplier; many online dealers offer them. Once they arrive, just follow the directions in order to use them. They pose no threat to anything except the pest bugs that you don’t want around. Aphidoletes - are small flies whose larva feed on aphids by sucking the bodily fluids from them. They kill many more aphids than they eat. They bite them first to paralyze them with venom before eating them. Pirate bugs - are small predatory bugs that eat a variety of pests including thrips, caterpillars, aphids and mites, as well as insect eggs. They are less than inch in length, and black with white markings. Both the adult and nymph stage are predators. They kill insects by piercing with their mouthparts and sucking out the body’s fluids. Lacewings - larvae are pest predators. The larvae are called aphid lions because of their voracious appetite. They pierce prey with mouthparts and suck out the juices. Adult lacewings are pollen feeders. The larvae also feed on mealy bugs, aphid eggs, spider mites, whiteflies, scale and thrips among others. Weight Management Through Spa Therapies

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Ashish Bhattacharya Introduction There has been much importance placed upon the fitness quotient of a person in modern times. With individuals leading sedentary and stressed lives, our fit-as-a-fiddle forefathers have given way to obese descendants, who could not care less for their couch potato image. Body weight has been on an exponential rise inflicting adults and kids alike. Weight reduction on everybodys mind Earlier considered to be the Americans forte, obesity has now afflicted a tremendous number of people continents and countries no bar. Surveys reveal shocking figures of people fighting obesity to gain more control on their lives. But, the icing on the cake is that, people have become aware of their bodies and plan to take action to have more control on it. This has seen the weights tilting towards fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Suddenly every Tom, Dick and Harry is concerned about weight management. Little wonder then, that weight reduction has gained the top most priority in hoi pollois to-do lists worldwide. Generic populace is frenziedly trying out any method that remotely promises to speed up weight loss. Myriad diets, astonishing exercise routines and the like have all become a part of our daily parlance. Moreover, people are now willing to experiment in order to lose weight and are jumping at any alternative, even if it is not tried and tested. Weight management and spas Spas have been known to people as healing centers where alternative therapies cure myriad ailments. Taking a holistic approach, spas can cure in a gentle way, targeting the root cause of the ailment, instead of merely suppressing the symptoms. Though weight reduction through spa treatments seemed to be far fetched a few years ago, people have now started realizing their importance off late. And who can deny a treatment that along with targeting the extra flab, also equally relaxes and comforts you. With spa therapies converging the best of therapies from all ancient cultures, there is no dearth of therapies that target obesity. But here, we will discuss in detail the effect of two therapies on body weight body wrap therapy and acupuncture therapy. These are known to have both a physical and holistic effect on the patient. Body wrap We are what we eat. And now-a-days, with the advent of junk foods, we are unconsciously torturing our systems no end. Excess consumption of alcohol, caffeine, sugar or salt infests the body with toxins that accumulate over a period. These are harmful in that they are the root of acne, skin disorders, and fat depositions under the tissue. A body wrap detoxifies the body of these deadly toxins, within a few sittings, to accelerate metabolism and lose weight real fast. The therapy comprises of wrapping the body in bandages that are soaked in essential oils or solutions. It starts with the therapist measuring various parts of your body, after which, the body is tightly wrapped in bandages to squeeze it to the maximum possible extent. These cloth bandages are soaked in essential oils or solutions. Light exercises of the bandaged body are then performed, which speeds up the release of toxins form the body. The therapist encourages you to drink large amounts of water before, during, and after exercising, since it is believed that water rids the body of unwanted toxins. After the procedure is over, the therapist will again measure body parts to check the amount of inches lost during the procedure. Repeatedly subjecting the body to this therapy will help you lose weight. Many claim to have lost more than 6 inches within a single session of body wrap. While many day spas offer this procedure with costs ranging between $110 and $150, there are also home versions available at a cheaper rate. Also, most spas offer discounts if you choose a multiple wrap offer. Maximum benefit can be extracted from a body wrap in one or two sessions per week, though it can also be performed twice in a single day. Acupuncture Acupuncture, a five thousand year old healing therapy developed in China has lately become the toast of the spa industry, particularly after its benefits in weight management and weight control were discovered. The west had not even heard of acupuncture, leave alone acupuncture weight loss, till recently. And when it did, it looked askance at acupuncture, a procedure wherein the skin of the patient is punctured using extremely thin needles. The west did not understand this eastern concept of healing, and was initially also a bit apprehensive to embrace this treatment. But, now that it has brought home this concept, there is no looking back, and weight loss through acupuncture is fast gaining acceptance. The treatment focuses on activating endorphins, the happiness hormones of the body. These endorphins curtail your desire to overeat, by getting released in the body. Thus the therapy targets the cravings instead of directly targeting weight. The therapy essentially starts with the pressure points, the most important one situated just behind the ear. Though our body consists of about a thousand pressure points all to cure various ailments, the weight loss point lies behind the ears. The therapist first inserts five needles at specific points behind your ears. Four of these points are directly connected to the lungs, liver, kidneys and the nervous system, while the fifth one is for relaxation. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alice_Erin]Alice Erin Number of mobile phones users are increasing much more than landlines. This scenario is not confined to UK or even Europe or America. Many countries from far east has experienced exponential growth in mobile telecommunication sector, many has more mobile phone subscribers than landlines. Mobility and other value added services apart, another reason for this unprecedented growth is that against one BT line many a times represents one family, mobile phones are personal, thus has a larger customer base. A single home numbered family may account for multiple mobile phone connections. This surge is aided by the sim free phones or the pay as you go phones. Owning a contract mobile phone may look more attractive with incentives like free handsets and free talk time and texts. However, for a low user, this equation may not work out. The term ‘low user’ could be anyone from your 15 year old kid to 75 year old grandfather. The best option for such cases is a sim free phone. sim free phones are also popular with the younger generation, especially students from both UK as well as the rest of the world. Advantages of a sim free phone includes - 1.You’re not bound by a contract so can change the handset or service provider at will.2.You can watch on your spending and avoid paying huge mobile phone bills.3.There are no monthly commitment so one thing less to worry about. A sim free phone could be bought from any store or the Internet. They are the ‘unlocked’ version of contract phones. Functions and applications offered in sim free phones are same, although certain features like 3G or EDGE are network specific. As for the functioning part, since almost all mobile phone manufacturers have their sim free models, there should be no problem for one to pick up the right mobile for the job.
